"PLAY-RE-PLAY" new research project

Here I would like to share my latest research and work in progress project, PLAY-RE-PLAY. I have started the first phase of the project in the frame of an amazing concept call “OPEN LOT” at Das Lot in Vienna. This project is also a first collaboration with the exceptional, sound artist and music producer, Victor Saiz, coming from Madrid Spain.

There was the opportunity for all artists to come and create in the common space from 9th till 29th of October 2023. I have connected with so many inspiring artists with whom I also shared my  practice in dance. Each day we were part of each other’s creative processes and giving each other feed backs on it.

And now to come back to the point of what we were researching in the first place. PLAY-RE-PLAY is envisaged to investigate the phenomenon of memory recreation and déjà vu.  I often experienced it in my life and as a dancer someone who trains all the time body to remember as well as in the music, inspired me to start the research on this topic.

Our brain is wired to create patterns and repeat them. But Can they be always repeated in the exact same way is the main question that I was asking through the process of movement creation. Each experience is also triggered by the environment and the emotion. What happens and why do we want to recreate them? Is it the clarity that we are searching on the way or we are just creating the new experience triggered by the past actions.

In the choreographic structure I used abstract short movement phrases and each represents pattern, memory. As in our brain they first appear only as fragments in our process of recollection till they find their clear way into our conscious actions. These short movement geometric movement fragments slowly start creating a journey and all of the sudden we are repeating the whole journey but reversing every single movement which brings completely different colour to the previous patterns. Our brain start to get overloaded with the amount of information and it starts defragmenting the patterns resulting into the chaos. The whole process is repeating all over again in an endless loop.

Music part of the piece is based on the similar composing method as choreographic score. Next part of our research is going into direction of making it interactive with the audience. Audience will be able to join the journey and choose which part of the performance they would like to be replayed, accompanied by Victor live processing the music score and me replying the movement sections.

Showing of the first phase of the project was performed in the frame of the OPEN LOT on 29th of October 2023.

As a semi finalist of the Brussels Dance Contest, I presented the solo in Brussels on 5th of November 2023 in Ultimate Vez studio.

Stay tuned for more new showings that are coming up in December 2023!
